Chinese Tree Peony
Publishing time: 1998 Book size: 285mm × 215mm Pages: 212 Language: English
The tree peony, or Mudan, is a very beautiful plant originating in China. The choice of Mudan in 1994 as the Chinese national flower was yet another honour to be added to the accolades and honorific titles bestowed on it over the centuries. For example, the names Fu Gui Hua and Bai Liang Jin given to tree peonies indicate that the flower is the symbol of happiness and good luck. The plant symbolises the characteristic temperament and cultural features of the Chinese nation, the prosperity of the country, and the diligence of the people.
It was not until the period between the Qin and Han Dynasties (221BC-220AD) that Mudan - the tree peony - was differentiated from Shaoyao - the herbaceous peony. Mudan cultivation thrived from 220 to 589 AD, and has continued for more than 1500 years. During this time, a gradual process of propagation and selection has led to the wide range of tree peony cultivars available now.
Present-day cultivars have tremendously varied characteristics resulting from the range of original species involved and from the different ecological environments. The expert's research work has determined four cultivar groups: the Central Plains, the Northwest, the Southern Yangtse and the Southwest Group. Of these, the Central Plains Cultivar Group is the richest in number of cultivars with varied flower forms, colours and length of cultivation history.
Chinese Tree Peony is an authoritative and comprehensive monograph. The book presents botanical, historical and current information on every aspect of Mudan in China. It also gives a detailed and invaluable catalogue of four hundred Central Plains Group cultivars with photographs and descriptions. It will play an important part in promoting the development and success of Mudan in both China and the rest of the world.
